Slow Cooker Apple Butter

  • Cooking Time:

    12 hours
  • Servings:

    4 pints

Ingredients

5 lbs. of your favorite apples - peeled, cored and cut into 1" pieces
2 c. Sugar
2 tsp. Ground Cinnamon
1/4 tsp. Ground Cloves
1 T. Lemon Juice

  1. Place the apples in the slow cooker.
  2. Sprinkle lemon juice over top apples.
  3. Combine the sugar, cinnamon, and cloves in a small bowl. Mix well.
  4. Add the sugar mixture into the slow cooker and stir.
  5. Cover. Cook on high 1 hour.
  6. Reduce heat to low and cook 9 to 11 hours, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is thickened and dark brown.
  7. Uncover and continue cooking on low 1 hour. Stir with a whisk, if desired, to increase smoothness.
  8. If desired, use am immersion blender to puree the apple butter.  (I prefer mine chunky though!)
  9. Spoon the mixture into containers, cover and refrigerate or freeze.

Note: Great to make during the holidays for gifts! This is for sure one of my favorites.

Wendy, you certainly could but you also can buy regular cloves and grind them in a spice grinder! I find that my spices are much fresher if I do this!

What kind of apples would work best. My guess is Granny Smith, but I’m not used to making anything with apples. A little guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

Can this be put in mason jars and “canned” using a boiling-water method?

Yes, you can use a hot water bath method to preserve it also. The canning book I have said to process it for 10 minutes.

I LOVE your site!! I can’t wait to try all of these. There are just so many!! With my husband and I both working you might have just saved my sanity. I can save soooo much time using your recipes and less time rushing up a meal.

This was wonderful! I ended up adding more cinnamon and cloves and added a dash of nutmeg at the end. Will definitely make again!
