Slow Cooker Chicken & Dumplings

  • Cooking Time:

    6 hours
  • Servings:

    6

Ingredients

4 skinless, boneless chicken breasts
2 T. butter
2 small cans of condensed cream of chicken soup
2 carrots, peeled & chopped
1 onion, diced
1 stalk celery, washed well and chopped
2 (10 ounce) packages refrigerated biscuit dough, torn into pieces
Water or Low Sodium Chicken Broth

This Slow Cooker Chicken & Dumplings recipe is an EASY and delicious version of those dumplings mom used to make. Enjoy!

  1. Place the chicken, butter, soup, carrots, celery and onion in a slow cooker.
  2. Fill the slow cooker with enough low-sodium chicken broth or water to cover ingredients.
  3. Cover.  Cook for 5 to 6 hours on High, or 8 to 9 hours on Low.
  4. About 30 minutes before serving, place the torn biscuit dough in the slow cooker. Cook until the dough is no longer raw in the center.

Variation from a Facebook Friend: Omit water and vegetables, substitute with 3 cups chicken broth, and use bisquick drop dumplings instead of the biscuits. (Good substitute if you don’t have pop-biscuits on hand!)

Amazing!!! This was sooo good – I tweeked it for the likens of the kids but only reduced the chicken to 2 breasts, cubed it, and reduced the biscuits to 1 can. They were licking their plates. Okay, I was too. Great recipe!

I made this recipe last night and it was awesome. It was incredibly easy and my daughter, husband and I all loved it and I will definitely make it again!

I am curious how the biscuits cooked. Were they gooey at all? Does it take right at 30 minutes for them to cook all the way through or just a bit longer?

Could I add egg noodles to this? If so when should I add them?

If I want to cook on low, how long would it need to cook? Would 10 hours be ok? I leave the house at 8 and get home just before 6.

It says above in her recipe 9-10 hours on low so it will be fine.

WOW…I made this and it was delicious! (I did change 2 things: I used 1 can cream of chicken soup and 1 can cream of celery. and I used a small can of chicken broth instead of using water.) I shared the leftovers with my neighbors and I got a phone call for the recipe. They could not believe how easy it was to make. It’s good ol’ comfort food!

I’m assuming the chicken breasts are not cooked when you put them in? If not, I just wasted 4 good chicken breasts…

I made my own dumplings from better homes and garden cookbook. They were really easy and good. A lot cheaper than store bought biscuits. Under chicken and dumplings

Just made this last night. Even my biggest food critic (mother of 4) said it was ‘pretty good’. Biscuits were gooey and took more like 45-60 minutes to cook. I used 6 breast and doubled most of the ingredients. Will DEF make again! Considering adding rice next time.

Do you cut the chicken before you put it in?

Having six people at home, I had to make a little bit of a bigger batch…I also added a can of cream of celery soup instead of chopping celery. I forgot to get canned biscuits so I used Bisquik and made drop dumplins. A little salt and pepper and about a tablespoon of poultry seasoning…O M G!!! It smells soooo good in here! We’re about to sit down to dinner…I’ll let you know what the five guys think!

HUGE winner in this house!! Had my parents over too (made a bigger batch, so fed 7 people and still had leftovers!) Everyone loved it, and even my pickiest eater scraped his bowl! Will definitely make this one again=)

In a regular pot if u peak (lift the lid) at all the dumplings disintegrate often turning broth into a yucky mess. I did that once with moms dumplings in the oven it was not very edible I asked mom why they disappeared and she said you peaked and I had lol

Were you supposed to use regular size bescuits? We bought the jumbo and we have one huge mushy pile of dough :(. This was after 40 minutes of cooking. I am trying to bake this dish (a friends suggestion to try and cook the dumplings).

I use the big biscuits every time. I do pat mine in flour because they were a little too gooey the first time I made them. This meal is a regular usually weekly at my house!!!!!!! LOVE IT!!!!!

This looks delicious but I try to stay away from the cream soups when I cook and prefer to use natural ingredients. Do you have a suggestion of what I can use as a substitute? Thanks!

Instead of flour, I’d grate in some fresh raw potato or maybe a combination of potato, turnip, celeriac, and/or parsnip. That’d give more flavor and more nutrition than flour 🙂

I guess Im a horrible cook because somehow all my biscuits stuck together and one big gooey mess. 🙁 I was really looking forward to pleasing my family with this.

Silly question…. could I use thighs instead of breasts??

Pam

My version is very similar except I omit the carrots & celery. I use refrigerated crescent roll dough rather than biscuits. It makes the dumplings light & fluffy with the tiniest hint of sweetness. SO GOOD!

Just made this tonight I used Pillsbury French Loaf instead of canned biscuits. I cut the roll length wise, then 1/2″ circles and cut the circles in half as well. IT TURNED OUT AMAZING!!!

No problem it was amazing 🙂 the only thing I need to add is that I had it on high the entire day and kept it on high when adding my dough, cooked it for 1hr 30m covered (started dough at 4 it was done by 530)

I have made this too. Although i rolled the biscuits in flour before putting them in the crock pot to prevent sticking together..didn’t really like the doughy taste of them..i think next time i will bake the biscuits in the oven them put them on top of the chicken mixture.

Gotta tell you I made this using chicken legs, followed the recipe, except I seasoned my chicken with seasoned salt, pepper and onion and garlic powder. The flavor was awesome,I cooked mine on low,but when it came to the dumplings,I only used 1 can and they took like 3 hours to cook and you have to keep stirring them or it’s one big dough ball, don’t know how they could possibly be done in 30 mins,so if your gonna make this give your dumpling a good 3 hours to cook, other than that,it was GREAT !!

When I make this, I always double the recipe for my family of five. Plus we love leftovers. I substituted one can of Cream of Celery in place of one can of the Cream of Chicken, and used chicken broth as well as water. I must say this was the best it has ever been, and I will make it like that from now on. It was delicious!

Is the nutritional info per serving? Fat grams, etc seems high for one serving with these ingredients. I’m trying to convert it into Weight Watcher points. Thanks
