Slow Cooker All Day Cube Steaks with Gravy

  • Cooking Time:

    7-8 hours on Low or 5-6 hours on High
  • Servings:

    6-8

Ingredients

1/2 c. flour
2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. dry ground mustard
2 lb. cube steak
2 T. vegetable oil
1 onion, sliced
1 packet brown gravy mix
1 c. water

Comfort food at it’s best: Slow Cooker All Day Cube Steaks with Gravy!

  1. Stir flour, salt, garlic powder and ground mustard together in a bowl.
  2. Dredge cube steaks in flour mixture.
  3. Brown in skillet in vegetable oil.
  4. Remove and place steaks in slow cooker.
  5. Add onion to skillet and cook a few minutes.
  6. Stir gravy mix and water together. Pour into skillet, scraping up the browned bits.
  7. Pour gravy and onions over meat in slow cooker.
  8. Cover. Cook on Low for 7-8 hours or on High for 5-6 hours.

Really only interested in recipes that don’t require extra pot’s do you think this would be ok doing crock pot only

I made this on Sunday and it turned out great, but the inside of the cube steaks never browned (only the outer layer, which I browned on the stove as directed). It was in the crockpot on low for over 7 hours so I know it has to be fully-cooked, but the color and texture are both a little weird. And it’s not the first time this has happened when I’ve cooked ground beef in the crockpot.

Is this normal?

Just made this yesterday, and it was delicious. Didn’t have dry mustard so used regular bottled mustard. Will make again. Meat was very tender!

Can I use the drippings in the pan, along with flour, to mark my own gravy? This sounds just wonderful.

I thought all gravy packets were basically the same, but I noticed the one I have, when you make it per directions, uses 1 3/4 C water (part of it you boil, part you mix with gravy mix in cold water, then add the 2 together) I wonder if I should increase the amount of water in this recipe. I’d hate for it to be runny.. but would also hate it to end up like beef jello 🙂

Help. Went out and bough cubed steak since this recipe looks so good. No time for slow cooking. Do I keep cooking in pan or put in oven after browning for best tenderness?

I love this recipe. I leave out the salt and onion and use a packet of Liptons dry onion soup mix. I also put Kitchen Bouquet on the steaks before I dredge them in the flour mixture. We like lots of gravy so I add a jar of Heinz brown gravy. Tastes great!
