Slow Cooker All Day Cube Steaks with Gravy

  • Cooking Time:

    7-8 hours on Low or 5-6 hours on High
  • Servings:

    6-8

Ingredients

1/2 c. flour
2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. dry ground mustard
2 lb. cube steak
2 T. vegetable oil
1 onion, sliced
1 packet brown gravy mix
1 c. water

Com­fort food at it’s best: Slow Cook­er All Day Cube Steaks with Gravy!

  1. Stir flour, salt, gar­lic pow­der and ground mus­tard togeth­er in a bowl.
  2. Dredge cube steaks in flour mix­ture.
  3. Brown in skil­let in veg­etable oil.
  4. Remove and place steaks in slow cook­er.
  5. Add onion to skil­let and cook a few min­utes.
  6. Stir gravy mix and water togeth­er. Pour into skil­let, scrap­ing up the browned bits.
  7. Pour gravy and onions over meat in slow cook­er.
  8. Cov­er. Cook on Low for 7–8 hours or on High for 5–6 hours.

I made this on Sun­day and it turned out great, but the inside of the cube steaks nev­er browned (only the out­er lay­er, which I browned on the stove as direct­ed). It was in the crock­pot on low for over 7 hours so I know it has to be ful­ly-cooked, but the col­or and tex­ture are both a lit­tle weird. And it’s not the first time this has hap­pened when I’ve cooked ground beef in the crock­pot.

Is this nor­mal?

Just made this yes­ter­day, and it was deli­cious. Didn’t have dry mus­tard so used reg­u­lar bot­tled mus­tard. Will make again. Meat was very ten­der!

Can I use the drip­pings in the pan, along with flour, to mark my own gravy? This sounds just won­der­ful.

I thought all gravy pack­ets were basi­cal­ly the same, but I noticed the one I have, when you make it per direc­tions, uses 1 3/4 C water (part of it you boil, part you mix with gravy mix in cold water, then add the 2 togeth­er) I won­der if I should increase the amount of water in this recipe. I’d hate for it to be run­ny.. but would also hate it to end up like beef jel­lo 🙂

Help. Went out and bough cubed steak since this recipe looks so good. No time for slow cook­ing. Do I keep cook­ing in pan or put in oven after brown­ing for best ten­der­ness?
