Slow Cooker Gluten Free Hot Cocoa Oatmeal

1 c. steel-cut oats, gluten free, (Bob Red’s Mill has gluten free oats)
4 c. water
1/2 c. coconut milk or vanil­la almond milk
2 T. cocoa pow­der
1 t. vanil­la
1/4 t. salt
2 T. coconut palm sug­ar
2 T. raw hon­ey
Nuts, for gar­nish

Break­fast of cham­pi­ons?  Check.  Feed the choco­late crav­ing first thing in the morn­ing? Check. Slow Cook­er “Gluten Free” Hot Cocoa Oat­meal is a hearty and fla­vor­ful oat­meal that gives you a pro­tein and choco­late fix in one!

  1. In a large bowl, com­bine the water, milk, vanil­la, and hon­ey. Add the cocoa, sug­ar, and sea salt. Last­ly, add oats.
  2. Coat inside of a 4-Quart slow cook­er with oil or use a Slow Cook­er Lin­er. Pour in Oat­meal mix­ture.
  3. Cov­er and crock on LOW 1–2 hours, and then set to WARM when you head for bed.
  4. In the morn­ing, give the oat­meal a good stir and top with some shaved choco­late and nuts to serve.(Note: If you like it real­ly sweet, you can always add more hon­ey or sug­ar right before serv­ing.)

Where in the world would one find Coconut palm sug­ar. Alter­na­tive?


Not sure of your area but Kroger car­ries coconut palm sug­ar, in the bak­ing aisle with the oth­er sug­ar and sweet­en­ers!

Can you use reg­u­lar oat­meal? Any change to the quan­ti­ty or the recipe if you do? What else can you use besides coconut palm sug­ar? This recipe sounds so great, i can’t wait to make it for my fam­i­ly!


This was excel­lent! Very easy to do the night before for a warm and sat­is­fy­ing break­fast. My kid­dos loved it. I used raw sug­ar and coconut oil to line the crock­pot. Topped with straw­ber­ries, mini choco­late chips and sliv­ered almonds. I may take some to work with me for lat­er.….. Thank you!

Can this be made with reg­u­lar oat­meal and sug­ar? I haven’t cooked “gluten free” so I don’t know if adjust­ments have to be made for cook­ing times, amount of flu­id etc? Thanks!


Is the coconut milk from the can or from the dairy sec­tion sim­i­lar to almond milk?


I made this for the kids for this morn­ing. I thought it was real­ly bland until I added choc chips and pecans. Does t stand for table­spoon or tea­spoon?
